Hello and welcome to my web site,

I have been interested in alterative power for the last 6 years or so. I first built a wind generator using an alternator of an old car from a scrap yard! The only trouble using a normal alternator you have to energize the unit first to produce power from a 12 volt supply and also the alternator is it has to spin at least 500 rpm before it will start charging the batteries so it was not very successful so then I bought a PMA (Permanente Magnet Alternator) this alternator is a very high powered unit and will start producing watts as soon as the shaft starts turning,

This is how I made this wind generator, The frame is made from 1" x 1/8" mild flat steel and 2" round steel tube with a 1"1/5 collar welded in the top this is the part that sits in top of the scaffold pole and stops it from sliding down the scaffold pole the PMA was imported from Mikes Windmill Shop this web site is very good for all your wind generator parts, you can purchase the composite carbon fibre blades from here etc you can even buy the complete mallard 800 watt wind generator from here in ether 12 volt or 24 volt, also there are water heaters for the dump load, the phrase "dump load" means that when your batteries are fully charged you will need to dump the excess charge from your batteries so that the generator will not over charge your batteries and damage them and this you can be controlled via a voltage regulator (these can be purchased from this shop Click Here . This unit will regulate your batteries, so in other words when your wind generator or solar panels charges your batteries to approx 14 volts, this unit will switch over to dump your excess power to i.e. a 12v water heater or 12 volt light bulbs etc and then when the batteries charge drops down to approx 12.5 volts this unit will switch back to charging your batteries again. Anyway back to how this wind generator was built!

Below are 3 photo's  you can see the over all shape of the frame in the 1st photo the 2nd photo is the collar welded in the 2" steel pipe.

The frame has been welded via a gasless mig welder these are fairly cheap to buy, that's if you have not already got one that is! now the hard  part is the two shafts on the end which are threaded, I made mine from 5/8" mild round steel and these have to be turned down on a lathe the diameter depends on the thread you want to use! also you must measure the distance of the brackets on the PMA  this is so the PMA will sit on your frame square and vertical and then it will need a thread, you may need to ask a metal engineering work shop to do this part for you?

Once you have made the frame you will need to give it a couple of coats of undercoat and at least 3 coats of topcoats (colour of your choice) the next thing you will have to make is the tail I made mine from a sheet of thin 2ft x 2ft mild steel  the shape of your tail. Is up to you but I personally chose the wedge shape as you can see below.

Now you will need to drill 2 holes in the tail and the frame for you to attach them together and of course the tail will need painting. The next thing you will have to do is bolt your PMA to the frame and then fit your 6 blades and hub to the PMA (You should get the hub with your blade set when you purchase them?)

The next job (that's if you have not ready done so) is to erect a scaffold pole in your garden I personally use a 20ft pole, there are several ways you can do this you can fit the pole to you shed or your gable end of your house but be warned some times in very high winds the blades will vibrate and keep you awake?? you could dig a large hole in your garden and the concrete it in and then you must use steel wire to anchor it down.

I fitted my generator to my garden fence and then fitted steel wire rope to anchor it down and it works fine.

Now for the wiring! you will need to fit the heavy cable down the centre of the scaffold pole and attach it to the PMA then the other end of the cable to your batteries via a voltage regulator, and then to a inverter which will then give you 240 volts to run your TVs and computers etc.

This unit is a 24 volt and will produce 800 watt (approx) at full power.

These are my 4 x 80 watt solar panels wire up into 24 volt which will produce in full sun approx

8amps.

 

All these wind generators and solar panels are wired up through a voltage regulator

and then they charge up my bank of six 70 watt batteries which intern are wired up to my 1000 watt inverter

(a inverter converts your 12 or 24 volt battery power in to 240 volt mains power.)
